Outreach and education are a priority for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC). One of their goals is to educate, raise awareness and have people act in the effort to remove the lionfish species from Florida’s coastal ecosystems. Nonnative lionfish have completely invaded coastal waters, which creates a threat to native marine life and habitat. Currently the lionfish invasion is one of the worst documented threats to Florida’s native marine species. Lionfish have the potential to negatively impact recreational and commercial fishing which is an important part of Florida’s economy.
